Premier Wynne: Keep your promise to Grassy Narrows!

In February 2017, Premier Wynne made an historic commitment to Chief Simon Fobister. She promised to clean up the mercury that has been poisoning the people of Grassy Narrows for over forty years.

Dear Premier Wynne,

On February 13, 2017 your government made an historic commitment to the people of Grassy Narrows. You committed to “creating and implementing a comprehensive remediation action plan for the English Wabigoon River,” which has been contaminated since a pulp and paper mill dumped 9 tonnes of mercury in the 1960s.

You also committed to stopping ongoing mercury contamination from the Domtar Industrial Site in Dryden. New evidence shows that mercury continues to leak into the Wabigoon River to this day. Mercury levels remain dangerously high despite the original contamination occurring more than fifty years ago.

Three generations of people in Grassy Narrows have been made sick from mercury, and they have been calling for a mercury cleanup for over forty years. Now you have the chance to deliver one without delay, and fulfill the promise that you made to Chief Simon Fobister.

I urge you to include the full cost of a remediation plan in this year's budget, to prove your commitment to delivering justice to the people of Grassy Narrows at long last. A short timeline and a sufficient budget are needed to make Grassy Narrows’ dream of a healthy river a reality.

I will be watching the 2017 budget closely to see that you are fulfilling your commitment to Grassy Narrows to begin a remediation action plan immediately, stop the ongoing mercury contamination, and address this urgent health crisis.
