Grassy Narrows has been fighting for government support to address the mercury crisis for 50 years now, with little action from successive federal governments.
In response to demands from the community and supporters, then Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott promised the community a Mercury Care Home would be built. That was in November of 2017. It’s been almost two years now, with little progress on the project. The Liberal government has stalled, not agreed to the required funding, nor to the nature of the care required in the Home & Treatment Centre.
Trudeau said during the election campaign that money was no objection to building the Mercury Home. Now that elections have concluded and the new Indigenous Services Minister is in place, Trudeau must get the job done, right away.
The Mercury Home is a key part of what the community needs in order to take care of those who need regular treatment as well as long-term care for mercury ailments. Right now, people have to travel many hours to places like Thunder Bay to get treatment. Even worse, those who need long-term care are living in cities like Winnipeg many hours away from their loved ones.
Hundreds of community members suffer from mercury poisoning and everyone is impacted by the mercury crisis. They have waited long enough. They need support right now.
