Mercury Justice Now: Updates from Grassy Narrows

Join Judy Da Silva (Grassy Narrows), Lee Maracle (Sto:lo), Vanessa Gray (Aamjiwnaang) and other guests in Toronto

Monday, November 6 at 7pm

Room 610 – 155 College Street

Health Sciences Building, University of Toronto

Join Judy Da Silva, Lee Maracle, Vanessa Gray, and other special guests in Toronto to hear updates from Grassy Narrows and learn more about their campaign for mercury justice. After a decades-long campaign by Grassy Narrows activists, the Ontario government has set aside $85 million to clean up the English-Wabigoon river system, which was contaminated with 9 tonnes of mercury in the 1960s by a paper mill. Yet at this time, little has been done for the people of Grassy Narrows who have experienced decades of mercury poisoning.

Judy Da Silva is a grandmother and land defender from Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows). She was one of the forty people from Grassy Narrows who came to Toronto in June to lead the River Run, to demand a mercury clean up of the English-Wabigoon river. Her five children give her strength.

Lee Maracle is the recipient of the 2014 Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the JT Stewart Voices of Change Award, the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation, and the Anne Green award for her book Memory Serves. Her recent publications include Celia’s Song, Talking to the Diaspora, Memory Serves and My Conversations with Canadians.

Vanessa Gray is a 25-year-old Anishinaabe kwe from Aamjiwnaang First Nation, located in Canada’s Chemical Valley. Vanessa is a grassroots activist bringing awareness to the health issues resulting from the reserve’s toxic surroundings. She’s a founding member of Aamjiwnaang and Sarnia Against Pipelines (ASAP). In 2015, Vanessa was arrested for shutting down Enbridge’s Line 9 pipeline.
