There are now more than four thousand mining claims in the Grassy Narrows Traditional Land Use Territory.
That was the figure unveiled by the MPP for Kiiwetinoong at Queen’s Park.
Sol Mamakwa says the Grassy Narrows First Nation has made it clear they don’t want any mining activity.
“So that the land the people can heal from the impacts of residential schools, child apprehension, damming, relocation, industrial logging and mercury poisoning,” Mamakwa told the Ontario Legislature on Thursday.
“This government has granted thousands of mining claims and nine mining exploration permits on Grassy Narrows land without their consent or even without consultation.”
Government house lead Paul Calandra says they will continue to consult with first nations to ensure so they can participate in the economic prosperity in the north.
