For decades, the community of Grassy Narrows in Northwestern Ontario has been battling mercury contamination on their land, in their water and food sources.

This started when a paper mill in Dyrden, Ont., upstream from the community, dumped more than 9,000 kilograms of mercury in the English Wabigoon River system.

It was a practice that took place between 1962 and 1970. Community leaders have been calling on provincial and federal governments to do a full cleanup of the mercury – to no avail.

But there are now reports the federal government will get involved.
