Abitibi

Abitibi is a Montreal-based Canadian logging corporation that holds the title of being the Boreal Forest’s number one logger: Abitibi removes 13.6 million cubic meters of wood from the Boreal Forest every year, turning the fiber into newsprint, catalogues, and book and magazine paper, for companies like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Abitibi is the primary entity responsible for logging on the Whiskey Jack Forest, which falls squarely on Grassy Narrows’ traditional territory. Despite sustained protest and opposition by Grassy Narrows, the Government of Ontario, has granted the company the right to log on the land until 2024.
